Getting Around Swindon — Trains, the M4 & Parking

Swindon's location has always been its strength — it grew up as a railway town, and it sits squarely on the M4. Here's how to get in, out, and around.

Trains to London and the West

Swindon railway station is on the Great Western main line and is mainly served by Great Western Railway (GWR). Trains to London Paddington are frequent — around every 15 minutes at peak times — with the fastest services reaching Paddington in under an hour. Heading the other way, there are fast links to Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, and South Wales, as well as services towards Gloucester and Cheltenham.

The station has its own car park (roughly 590 spaces), but it fills up early on weekday mornings, so allow time or consider dropping off.

Driving and the M4

Swindon is served by two junctions of the M4: junction 15 (Coate, on the south-east side, for the A419 towards Cirencester and the M5) and junction 16 (west Swindon, for the A3102 and the west of the town). The A419/A417 provides a fast dual-carriageway link north towards Cirencester, Gloucester, and the M5.

Parking in the town centre

There are several town-centre car parks and multi-storeys. The Brunel multi-storey is the largest and sits right next to the Brunel Centre shopping area. Others include Fleming Way (near the bus station and Regent Circus) and Islington Street. Some council car parks offer a limited period of free or low-cost parking — always check the tariff boards on arrival.

Buses

The bus station is on Fleming Way in the town centre, with local services run by Stagecoach and other operators reaching across the town and out to Highworth, Wroughton, Royal Wootton Bassett, and the surrounding villages.
